Know the Law

Cannabis Law in Thailand, Plainly Explained.

Riverside Dispensary · Chiang Mai

Cannabis rules in Thailand have shifted more than once in the past few years, and a lot of what circulates online is outdated. Here's a plain-language overview of where things currently stand — written from the retail side, as a licensed store operating under these rules day to day.

This is general information, not legal advice, and regulations can change. For anything specific to your own situation, check current guidance from the Ministry of Public Health or consult a Thai lawyer.

Cannabis is classified for medical use

Cannabis in Thailand is regulated as a medical-use product under Ministry of Public Health rules, not sold or marketed under a general recreational framework. Retailers like us operate under that classification, which is also why you won't see recreational-use claims, health promises, or lifestyle marketing from a compliant shop — that kind of framing isn't permitted regardless of how the product is actually used.

Who can legally buy

What retail stores can't do

A 2025 Ministerial Notification made cannabis advertising broadly prohibited — across traditional media, online, and social platforms — regardless of how it's phrased. In practice, that means a legitimate shop won't be running paid ads, influencer promotions, discount campaigns, or health-claim marketing for cannabis products. If you see a business doing that, it's a sign they're operating outside current rules, not a sign the rules don't apply.

This is also why our own online presence is deliberately informational — hours, location, general product categories — rather than promotional.

Where you can legally consume

Public consumption is restricted — smoking or vaping cannabis in most public spaces is not permitted, and doing so can carry penalties similar to a public nuisance offense. Consumption is generally expected to happen in private settings.

What this means as a visitor or resident

If you're buying from a Thai cannabis retailer, expect ID checks, no on-site consumption in most cases, and no promotional pricing gimmicks — a store following the rules will look and operate differently from what you might have seen in other countries. That's not a lesser experience; it's what compliant retail here actually looks like.

Bottom line: cannabis is legal to buy and possess in Thailand within this medical-use framework, but the rules around age, advertising, and where you can consume it are real and enforced. A shop that's upfront about those limits is one that's actually following them.
